Vertical Storage Systems
A vertical storage system is an automated storage and order picking solution that functions by a push of a button or scan of a barcode. These storage systems improve the performance of your warehouse, as well as the efficiency and flexibility of your storage and order picking processes with a minimum amount of space required.
Vertical storage systems can be separated into two groups: carousels (ferris wheel technology) and vertical lift modules (VLM). Vertical carousels have fixed carriers, which are generally better for storing large numbers of like sized items. Vertical lift modules store items in front and back tray that are accessed by a center extractor to retrieve and put away the pans. Both types of vertical systems are computer controlled and bring the goods to the person at an ergonomically positioned removal location.
These storage solutions can be built quite high to maximize the available overhead space in your facility. Moreover, multiple units can be placed in “pods” where an operator can retrieve items from one unit while the other units are moving simultaneously, enhancing timing and efficiency.
At Illinois Material Handling, we can perform surveys of your facility and material handling processes to provide recommendations on which system would best suit your specific application.
